Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life but his ideas and works including the Cthulhu Mythos have become hugely influential. His starkly bleak philosophy informs every tale he wrote. Lovecraft emphasized the absolute insignificance of humanity and its ignorance of the forces governing an incomprehensible and terrifying universe.

  • Alice In Wonderland
  • Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll.[1] It tells of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world (Wonderland) populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre, and its narrative course and structure have been enormously influential, especially in the fantasy genre.

  • Myths Every Child Should Know
  • A selection of the classic myths of all times for young people.  This selection represents the work of several authors, and does not, therefore, preserve uniformity of style. It is probably better for the young reader that the Greek myths should come from one hand, and the Norse myths from another.

  • "All children, except one, grow up." Thus begins a great classic of children's literature that we all remember as magical. What we tend to forget, because the tale of Peter Pan and Neverland has been so relentlessly boiled down, hashed up, and coated in saccharine, is that J.M. Barrie's original version is also witty, sophisticated, and delightfully odd. The Darling children, Wendy, John, and Michael, live a very proper middle-class life in Edwardian London, but they also happen to have a Newfoundland for a nurse. The text is full of such throwaway gems as "Mrs. Darling first heard of Peter Pan when she was tidying up her children's minds," and is peppered with deliberately obscure vocabulary including "embonpoint," "quietus," and "pluperfect." Lest we forget, it was written in 1904, a relatively innocent age in which a plot about abducted children must have seemed more safely fanciful. Also, perhaps, it was an age that expected more of its children's books, for Peter Pan has a suppleness, lightness, and intelligence that are "literary" in the best sense. In a typical exchange with the dastardly Captain Hook, Peter Pan describes himself as "youth... joy... a little bird that has broken out of the egg," and the author interjects: "This, of course, was nonsense; but it was proof to the unhappy Hook that Peter did not know in the least who or what he was, which is the very pinnacle of good form." A book for adult readers-aloud to revel in--and it just might teach young listeners to fly. (Ages 5 and older)

  • the_scots_and_medieval_arthurian_legend__arthurian_studies__book
  • The Scots and Medieval Arthurian Legend (Arthurian Studies) Book
  • This volume of essays on "The Scots and Medieval Arthurian Legend" addresses several different ways in which tensions between Scotland and England are reflected in Medieval Scottish literature about King Arthur as a legendary and historical figure. The focus remains on texts written in Latin or Scots, not in Gaelic. In their introduction Rhiannon Purdie and Nicola Royan (1-8) give a short overview of the collection, explaining that Scotland has its own idiosyncratic approach of Arthur. The period covered extends from the Historia Regum Britanniae (c. 1136, henceforth HRB) up to the accession of James VI in 1603 to the English throne as James I. HRB is the first text in which the idea of Arthur as king of the whole of the island of Britain is upheld, with the implication that the sovereignty of the ruler of England extends over Scotland.

Encompassing romance, heroism, duty, and conflict, Tennyson's poetry charts the rise and fall of a legendary society.
